What's Christmas about again?

Christians protest actions that play down Christmas' religous nature

We have a brand new addition to the Dumb Quotations List. This is compliments of Brian O'Leary, president of the Maplewood, N.J. school board:

Board President Brian O'Leary said in a statement that playing songs that "focus on religious holidays ... could become an opportunity not to learn about a religious holiday or tradition, but to celebrate it."

Uh...what? I doubt your districts are giving kids a couple weeks out of school because they need a de-stresser or time with their parents. I think there might have originally been a holiday involved.

The newsfeed that you clipped from is no longer available, so I don't know if you edited my words or had to rely on someone else's edit. What I said in December, 2004 was:

"In addition, we continue to support the restriction that music programs prepared or presented by student groups as an outcome of the curriculum shall not have a religious orientation or focus on religious holidays. Absent that restriction, a concert or performance could become an opportunity not to learn about a religious holiday or tradition, but to celebrate it."

That's the full quote. The policy was specific to concerts on school grounds or by school-sponsored groups, and it covered how we use instructional time while in school.

Your calendar argument isn't really relevant. This was a debate about how we use time in school, not what people do when not in school. We were asking teachers to teach about a range of religious traditions, not celebrate one to the exclusion or preference of others.

I see from your blog that you went on to do some reporting. As you know, it's important to get the full story before generating a viewpoint. You might still have a problem with what we elected to do, but I think you needed to do more work to find out both what I said and why before hoisting me in your blog.
